Coconut Oil for Skin

smile

Here’s a give a great trick on how to use coconut oil as a moisturizer. Many times people ask me if I have any recommendations for a natural moisturizer, and I always recommend coconut oil. Usually the response I get back is that people don’t want to put coconut oil or any oil on their skin during the day. At nights that’s okay but during the day I don’t want to walk around, with a thick layer of oil on my skin, which is totally understandable. Here’s a trick as to what you can do during the day, to still use the coconut oil as a moisturizer but without having a heavy layer of oil on your skin.

Coconut Oil for Face

In the morning when you take a shower, wash your face then afterwards pat your face dry. Then, take a very small amount of coconut oil, rub it in your hands and then just pat it on your skin. I suggest leaving it on the skin at least for 5 minutes. You can leave it on longer if you want. If you want to leave it on longer for 10 minutes, a half an hour, an hour or a few hours whatever you want. Or just a minimum 5 minutes just so that it can absorb into your skin. Then rinse your skin, splashing some cold water on your face 2 or 3 times patting it dry, and that’s it. Splashing cold water on the skin will just clear off any of the extra oil residue.  You still get the benefits from coconut oil, but you’re not walking around with heaving shiny skin.  Great trick try it out, it actually works.

Coconut Oil for Acne

A lot of people also ask me too if they can use coconut oil if they’ve got acne prone skin. For some people its fine, other people it’s not. If you’ve had prior experiences using coconut oil or any other oil and you get heavy break outs, then I would stay away from it. For others that do have acne, they have found it actually helps. Listen to your body, each person is different.

Some people ask, hey my Coconut Oil is solid and its white. Is there something wrong with it, has it gone bad? No. Coconut oil goes solid at room temperature. The moment that it’s at all warmed, whether you take a small amount and you just put it on your hand it will start to liquify. It goes solid at room temperature or at colder temperatures, and then it gets warmed up it will turn into liquid.

Where Can I get Coconut Oil

Some people ask questions regarding different brands of coconut oil. If you’re interested in Where to Buy Coconut Oil check out our post here.  I always recommend people buy organic, and also cold pressed and refined coconut oil. If you want a quick trick, you can tell it’s refined if there’s no odor to it.

Mother Nature has blessed us with one of the greatest things on earth. It’s not made in a lab and it’s responsible for tons of cool stuff that you can do in your house, for your kids, for your pets, for your own health. I want to show you all the things that you could do with coconut oil and the power, the healing, the miraculous power of coconuts.

In Sanskrit the word “Kelper brichka” actually means the tree that gives all things necessary for living. And that is the coconut tree. It’s an amazing miraculous healing super fruit and I want to tell you 11 things that you can use today when you start to invoke the power of the coconut oil.

1) Help with Thyroid Function

One of the greatest things about coconut all that I love is that it’s actually laced with MCTs – medium chain triglycerides. Now most oils like soybean oil and the different things that people are cooking with are long-chain triglycerides. So the medium chain triglycerides are a lot easier for your body to access and use it as an energetic pathway. These help with thyroid function, kidney function. Every organ in your body absolutely love coconut oil.

I like to cook with it too because it has a lower smoking point out of the other oils that you are using. Olive oil as an example has a smoking point of around 275° whereas the coconut oil can supersede 350°. And you know this if you have been following me for any time that if you heat your oil up too much it can actually cause free radical damage in your body, so you don’t want to do that. Coconut oil is absolutely amazing.

2) Hydrate your Body

Have ever taken a nice bath with magnesium salt, maybe some stuff you bought at the store to use a little aromatherapy and put you in a really good state right. Maybe your kids just went to bed and you need to relax for a little so that you can restore, it’s all about that the recovery time right. What I do is I add told 2 giant tablespoons of coconut oil in my bathtub with the magnesium. What that does is it actually hydrates your body, it actually coats your skin, it actually helps magnesium transport itself in you.

3) Coconut Oil Pulling

I take coconut oil first thing in the morning, swooshing it around 10 or 15 minutes, pretty vigorously moving around in between my teeth. I do this because coconut oil gets rid of the bacteria in your mouth. Your mouth is an epicenter for bacteria and if you clean your mouth out enough it actually gets rid of the bacteria that can go in your body and start to cause inflammation and can start to cause disease. 4) Put it in your Coffee

Instead of using one of those artificial sweeteners you see in the grocery store to put in your coffee in the morning or in the afternoon are whenever you have it. Blend it with a little coconut oil with the MCT and it actually is better for you. You’re getting the fat which is going to satiate you, curb your appetite, help you lose weight. The oil with MCTs in there has been shown clinically to actually help with that and it also tastes really good. Sound Cool? Read more about putting Coconut Oil in your Coffee here.

5) Natural Lotion

Using it as a natural lotion, I love putting this stuff all over my body. Wake up in the morning, rub it all over your body. Usually what I do in the morning is I do a lymphatic shower so I go hot cold hot cold, get the lymphatic system moving. And then when I get out of the shower I put coconut oil all over and you can do the exact same thing. To make your own lotion use this recipe:

  • 1/2 cup Almond or olive oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • Optional: 2 tablespoon Shea Butter
  • Optional: Essential Oils, (I use Vanilla Extract)

6) Antiviral and Antifungal

Because coconut oil is antiviral and antifungal, it can be applied to acne or cold sores. Coconut contains medium chain triglycerides packed with antiviral and antibiotic properties. These fats are capable of dissolving the outer layer of lipid covered bacteria and viruses. They are even more effective after touching enzymes in the human body, destroying invaders within. Acne is an infection in the openings of the sebum glands, the glands on the skin. These glands can become clogged by bacteria and result in inflammation. Put some coconut oil on your skin to help kill these bacteria so your body can heal fast! Cold Sores are caused by the herpes virus that lies dormant in nerve cells but are activated by stress, illness, anxiety, or sun exposure. In a similar way, coconut oil helps kill the virus as it sheds.

Alright so one of my favorite ways to use coconut oil and I know you are going to love this as well. Maybe you’re already doing it, you probably are because you are smart, is to put a scoop in a smoothie. When you have berries in a smoothie, the kind of analogy that I like to use is it’s kind of like a song. An orchestra; now you hear the violinist, you hear the horns, but if you don’t have bass. If you don’t have the drums it just doesn’t sound right. Coconut oil acts like the bass in an orchestra. It brings everything together; it helps the absorption of the enzymes, the phytonutrients, the aminoes, the phytochemicals, all of those delicious things that we get, the antioxidants from the berries. It helps your body really utilize them and absorb them.

14) Coconut Oil as a Lubricant

Unlike other lubricants, coconut oil is all natural and doesn’t contain any preservatives or added ingredients that can cause adverse reactions in people with allergies. It is more lubricating than a water-based lubricant so it lasts longer. Coconut oil has also been shown to be anti-fungal, so it can help keep nasty yeast infections at bay. Coconut-Oil-for-Hair-720x300

Coconut oil has an endless list of benefits that is only getting known recently. It seems like a trend that will die down soon, but trust us when we say that coconut oil will be around for a good long time. You might not know but it’s been around and used for thousands of years. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be on board with the rest of the coconut oil fanatics.

If you’ve used coconut oil, you may have not realized this, it makes an excellent use for hair as it promotes hair growth. Healthy and shiny hair is possible with the use of coconut oil.

Here’s how hair can be grown faster, healthier, and much stronger with coconut oil.

How does it help with hair growth?

  • It protects hair protein. The lauric acid in coconut oil provides a protective coat that is covered on your hair when you use it.
  • It seals in moisture and keeps hair soft. Your hair will be much stronger and moisturized when you apply coconut oil.
  • It has properties of antifungal and antibacterial. Dandruff and lice stands no chance against hair that is treated with coconut oil.
  • Coconut oil has nutrients. Your hair will be strengthening with vitamin E, K and iron as it needs it for the shine and softness.
  • Blood circulation will be improved. Massaging your scalp with coconut oil will ensure that your hair receives nutrients that it requires.

How do you apply coconut oil?

So much talk of the benefits, now it’s time to talk about how you can actually apply the oil.

With curly or thick hair, you should apply the oil after you wash your hair and shower. It will not appear greasy or wet after you apply it so don’t worry about that.

If you have wavy or straight hair, you should apply the oil before you wash your hair.

If you apply the oil before you shower, massage it into your hair for a good 5 minutes. Allow the oil to sit in your hair for at least 30 minutes. You can leave it in for up to 4 hours if you have serious hair problems.

Or the 2nd option is mixing in the oil with your shampoo. Just mix and focus on getting a mixture of 50% shampoo and 50% coconut oil.

Coconut oil can even be beneficial for those who are already bald or going through the process. It can even be used to prevent gray hair.

The oil is widely available. Try to get one that is pure and natural. Coconut oil is best when it isn’t altered in any way.

Refined coconut oil:

While it’s tasteless and has no odor, refined coconut oil is perfect for cooking as it can handle higher cooking temperatures. Avoid the kind that has hydrogenated or has any synthetic trans-fats. We recommend:

refined

Unrefined coconut oil:

This is made without the addition of any chemicals. There is both virgin and extra virgin but both are quite similar. It should smell natural without the smell of toast or anything else. We recommend:

unrefined

Coconut Oil in Coffee

coffee

If you’re a coffee lover, then you’ll surely be a coconut oil coffee lover. It is rare to find someone who doesn’t drink coffee, but we all know why most of us are so addicted to it. The waking feeling, the alertness, and maybe the smell are all a powerful combination from a great cup of roasted beans. But how can it get any better than that?

Most of us pour sugar or something sweet in our coffee to make it more enjoyable. Or maybe we do it for more energy. In any case there’s something better than everything you can put in your coffee put together. The solution is coconut oil.

The thought of putting something like oil in coffee may sound gross, but trust us, it’s the most delicious thing you can ever do to your cup of coffee. It’s the natural energy that combines with the powerful caffeinated energy that makes it so good. While it does taste pretty good, you’ll find the benefits to be so powerful.

Why do I put coconut oil in my coffee?

Coconut oil is filled with Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s) which is where most of the benefits come from. It’s great for digestion, immunity, and of course energy. MCT is a mid-chain triglyceride compared to other fats which are long chain triglycerides. The difference is that your body takes longer to break down long chain triglycerides and that happens in your intestines.

If you eat coconut oil compared to a different oil or fat, you will increase your energy expenditure and your metabolic rate as well. In the long term eating coconut oil will lead to weight loss as well. Fat is more or less the resource you have when you do like aerobic exercise. The mid chains in coconut oil break down in your liver into ketone bodies that your body actually likes to use over glucose.

coffee3

How do you make coffee with coconut oil?

Now that you know how good it can make your cup of coffee, and how much more energy you can have, you may be wondering how you can make this drink happen.

It’s recommended that you use organic coffee for the best of the benefits. Any coffee will do though. Next, after you brew your coffee add a teaspoon of coconut oil to your coffee. Start small so you don’t overwhelm yourself with the taste of the oil.

If you have trouble finding the right coconut oil, make sure you choose one that is natural, and unaltered. Go here to find out Where to Buy Coconut Oil

Next you should blend the coffee. Most recommend blending because it really mixes the oil and the coffee together. If you don’t have a blender you can just stir it but you will truly find a big difference if you blend them together.

Now you have your own coffee mixed with coconut oil. Start small to build up to it as you don’t want to surprise yourself with an overwhelming taste or anything. The benefits of the oil are fantastic and basically endless. Why not enjoy it in the hot cup of coffee that you probably already have every morning?

Should I add Milk?

Well if you want to have the most benefits out of it I would not put milk inside because milk is a insulinogenic. Because of the lactose in milk, it spikes your insulin. To get the most benefits you don’t want to spike our insulin. Because you’ve just come out of a fast while waking up in the morning, you’re getting all the benefit of your body still utilizing your body fat as energy. If your insulin spikes it shuts down your fat production, using your fat as energy and switches to a different mode. Your fat burning mode turns off, and that’s bad if you want to stay focused and lose weight.

Coconut Oil for Dogs

dog

If you are a pet owner and a health-conscious person it’s important to note that all of those same health benefits are also passed down to the dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, ferrets and rabbits in your life. The oil consists of 90% saturated fats which are mostly Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are really what make coconut oil so good for both our health and for our dogs. Coconut oil is one of the richest sources of medium chain triglycerides and medium chain essential fatty acids that you can find anywhere. The great thing about medium chain triglycerides for pets is that it’s a rich source of energy and it contains lauric acid.

Lauric acid and Medium Chain Triglycerides are beneficial in terms of helping the immune system by:

  1. Being anti-viral
  2. Being Anti-fungal
  3. Being Anti-bacterial

Also, medium chain Triglycerides

  1. Can be used as an immediate source of fuel and energy
  2. Helps maintain a healthy weight
  3. Balances the thyroid (this can help dogs feel energetic)

I love coconut oil for dogs and cats specifically because it is easy to digest. So I feel very confident recommending it for patients that have gastrointestinal problems. Patients with IVD or dysbiosis and sensitive stomachs can really benefit from coconut oil because coconut oil doesn’t require lipase or gall bladder secreted bile to help process it. Many of the essential fatty acids on the market require pancreatic secretions of the digestive enzyme lipase as well as bile for appropriate digestion and assimilation. Coconut oil is excellent because you can provide it to your pets and it doesn’t cause any additional requirement for absorption on digestion. Your pets are able to assimilate it beautifully without having to require any other organ’s work for assimilation and digestion. Coconut oil does a great job of helping to balance dysbiotic patients or animals that are having ratio of good to bad bacteria issues in their GI track.

dog2

Coconut oil is terrific for animals that have allergies or skin and coat problems. So in my practice we recommend it for pets that have dry flaky skin to the winter. We recommend it for animals that have thin coats or that are shedding excessively. I love coconut oil topicality as well for pets that have cuts, abrasions, sores, dry cracked noses on old dogs, elbow pads of dogs that are thick and irritated. Even on the pads of their feet during winter months is an excellent moisturizer for pads that that cracked or irritated. So at my practice we advocate using coconut oil. Topicality we recommend using coconut oil internally for all of the health benefits. In terms of helping to provide lauric acid in a absorbable form for dogs and cats.

Dogs Love Coconut Oil!

At my house my pets love coconut oil. In fact they’ll eat it right off the spoon. In my house I use coconut oil for administering pills and medications because they love it. And so I really just take a scope of it and my pets will eat it right off the scoop. The dose for coconut oil is a teaspoon for every 10 to 20 pounds of body weight. Occasionally initially I will use a teaspoon for every 5 pounds but maintenance dose is a teaspoon for every 10 to 20 pounds of body weight. At my house I am able to put the pills right on a scoop of coconut oil and offer it to my pets and they will eat right off the spoon. So it’s an excellent treat but it’s a treat with a whole host of medicinal benefits.

Dogs can have coconut oil as its great for their coats, helps with digestion, and it can even prevent infections and strengthen immunity. As with all things though, too much of one thing can have negative effects so follow the guidelines properly. And these benefits are not only obtained through consumption of the oil, but it can also be applied directly on the skin and coat of the dog. If your dog has a wound, or a skin condition, coconut oil can make the healing process go much quicker. It can even deodorize your dog’s skin.

dog3

How Much Coconut Oil can Your Cog use?

If your dog is around 50 pounds, you can put about 2 tablespoons in its food. Start small though and work your way up so there are no surprises or sudden changes to your dog’s diet.

To fight off fleas, you should brush the coat with coconut oil especially during the hot seasons like summer.

You’re not forcing your dog to eat coconut oil, it’ll love it. Why invest in any other product if it doesn’t enjoy eating it?

So don’t start dumping coconut oil all over your dog’s food without starting small. Increase the servings slowly over a long period of time. Coconut oil isn’t just used for dogs, there are other animals who enjoy it like cows, horses, and even goats.

Sometimes the best way to ensure the best health for our loving pets is to feed it natural foods that have super amazing benefits for them and that they can enjoy as well. Start small and see how they like it!
